Blending Guide · 12 min read
Most people smell a blend and either love it or don't — but few understand why. Behind every great essential oil blend is a framework that perfumers have used for centuries. Once you understand it, you will never smell a fragrance the same way again.
THE THREE-NOTE SYSTEM
Top Notes · 30% of blend
The First Impression
Top notes are the first thing you smell — bright, volatile, and gone within 15–30 minutes. They create the initial emotional response and set expectations for the blend.
Middle Notes · 50% of blend
The Heart
Middle notes are the character of your blend — what it is really about. They appear after the top notes fade and last 2–4 hours. This is where the emotional intention lives.
Base Notes · 20% of blend
The Anchor
Base notes anchor the blend, slow the volatility of top notes, and add depth and longevity. They are often the notes you smell hours later on skin or fabric.
Blending Rule
Start with 3–4 oils maximum. Build your formula on paper before mixing. Always smell ingredients individually first. Let the blend rest 24 hours before judging — the notes evolve as they marry.
